Protecting Refugees: Rebuilding Lives in Safety and Dignity
In 2008, World Refugee Day is not only an occasion to salute the incredible tenacity and strength of the world's refugees, but also an opportunity to thank all those who protect refugees and provide them with a chance to rebuild their lives in safety and dignity.

Twenty non-governmental organisations are 25 September launching the region
wide campaign “Keep Them Safe”, which aims to strengthen the protection
of persons fleeing generalized violence and gross human rights abuses.
The Almedalen Week is an annual event taking place in July in and around
Almedalen on the Swedish island Gotland. With
speeches, seminars and other political activities, it is considered an
important forum in Swedish politics.
In order to gain deeper understanding of the protection and assistance problems
they face, it is essential to consult displaced men, women and children directly
and to listen to them.
The ninth annual Nordic Baltic Consultative Committee meeting was held in Stockholm on 26 April, 2007. The meeting, hosted by the UNHCR Regional Office, brought together 33 government officials and NGO representatives from seven countries in the region plus some ten UNHCR staff.
You are arrested, beaten up and forced to sign a confession, just for taking part in a peaceful march. Fearing even worse to come, you flee your country taking only what you can carry in a small rucksack. You arrive in a strange city where you don't speak the language. You don't know anyone. You don't know where to go. You have to find shelter, reliable information and get a job.

With exhibitions, collections, appeal letters and prayers in the international
refugee week at the end of June, religious societies all over the region brought
attention to the millions of refugees in the world.
