UNHCR Regional Office for the Baltic and Nordic Countries

The main task of the UNHCR office in Stockholm is to support the governments in the region in their implementation of the 1951 Refugee Convention. This support is given in the form of advice on the application of international treaty standards, training in refugee law and information concerning refugee and asylum issues. The Regional Office also assists NGOs and asylum lawyers by giving advice, information and training.

The basis of the legal protection work in the region is international refugee law, European Union Directives, UNHCR handbooks and guidelines, as well as extensive knowledge of national legislation.

The main objectives of the external relations unit are to place refugee- and asylum issues on the agenda, raising awareness and providing correct and updated information about the situation of the world’s millions of refugees.

The UNHCR Regional Office also cooperates closely with governments, local authorities, NGOs and other UN agencies in organising public information campaigns, conferences and events. Maintaining good media relations is a priority.

Private sector fund raising is playing an increasingly important role in the financing of UNHCR's global activities, and the Regional Office raises funds from individuals, funds, foundations and the corporate sector. The Regional Office acts as secretariat for the 'UNHCR Fundraising Foundation' in Sweden.

The Office is located in Stockholm, Sweden, and has a Liaison Officer in Vilnius, Lithuania.
