The cheque was presented to UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Barbara Hendricks during a spectacular gala event in Stockholm.
UNHCR is delighted to have received a SEK 9 million contribution from the Swedish Postcode Lottery yesterday evening. The cheque was presented to UNHCR Honorary Lifetime Goodwill Ambassador Barbara Hendricks during a spectacular gala event in Stockholm on 13 February. 9 million SEK is the highest annual contribution UNHCR has ever received from the Postcode Lottery since becoming a beneficiary in 2009.
- The generous support from the Swedish Postcode Lottery will enable UNHCR to provide more and better assistance to people forced to flee their homes. More resources are needed for the protection of refugees in ongoing and new situations, especially in Africa, says Pia Prytz Phiri, Regional Representative for UNHCR’s regional office for the Baltic and Nordic countries.
The head of the Swedish Postcode Lottery Charity Department, Stina Götbrink, is pleased to share a record SEK 945 000 000 divided amongst the 40 beneficiary organisations:
- We are proud to contribute to the important work of UNHCR. By supporting our beneficiaries we take one step closer to our vision of a better world for people, wildlife and the environment.
The Postcode Lottery emphasizes that the increase in size of the donation is made possible thanks to their one million lottery ticket buyers in Sweden.
Since the beginning in 2005, the Swedish Postcode Lottery has distributed 2.8 billion SEK to non-profit organizations. The company is part of the Dutch Novamedia group. Along with its sister lotteries in Holland and Scotland, the Swedish Postcode Lottery is the world’s third biggest donor to the non-profit sector.
UNHCR has been a beneficiary of the Swedish Postcode Lottery since 2009. UNHCR has to date received at total of 8 million SEK in annual contributions, supporting its work in the world’s largest refugee camp Dadaab as well as Pakistan. The Lottery has also contributed an additional SEK 3 million to UNHCR’s emergency assistance in Haiti.
