The LEGO Foundation is helping to fill the urgent humanitarian needs on the Horn of Africa

Press Release  06 September 2011

As a response to the massive and urgent needs on the Horn of Africa, the LEGO Foundation will contribute one million Danish crowns to UNHCR emergency relief in the region.

”In the LEGO Foundation we believe that we have a global responsibility to be a contributor in giving the World's many exposed and vulnerable children the chance of a better future” says Morten Aagaard, President of the LEGO Foundation. “We recently engaged in a collaboration with UNHCR and it was only natural for us to step in to support their great effort on the Horn of Africa."

Somalia is at the center of one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world today. The worst drought in 60 years has caused a most severe food crisis in East Africa, leading to a massive displacement within the country and refugee flows across borders into Kenya, Yemen, Ethiopia and Djibouti. Those countries are themselves hard hit by the drought. The UN estimates that one in three Somalis is in urgent need of humanitarian assistance and a third of all children living in south-central Somalia are malnourished.

“It is heartening that the LEGO Foundation demonstrates its readiness to back UNHCR assistance on the Horn of Africa.” says Hans ten Feld, UNHCR Regional Representative in the Baltic and Nordic countries. “UNHCR urgently needs funding to support existing refugee camps in Kenya and Ethiopia, and to establish new ones to continue to provide shelter, food, water and protection for thousands of new refugees arriving daily.”

The LEGO Foundation donation will help UNHCR continue to provide its life-saving help for people in the region.

In June 2011, the LEGO Foundation and UNHCR agreed to join forces to provide education and ensure development and well-being of children who are refugees, asylum-seekers and stateless as well as returnee and internally displaced children assisted and protected by UNHCR.
