The experience of fleeing your home country never leaves you, but changes over time.
UNHCR Regional Office for the Baltic and Nordic countries has launched a new column project. In this unique project former refugees share their experiences and insights on their journey to build a new life in the Nordic countries.
Our accomplished columnists originate from all over the world, from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iran, Rwanda and Vietnam but one common feature is that they live in the Nordic countries. They have very different backgrounds, but they have all been refugees once.
- There are so many stories out there that we have yet to hear. We believe that these stories are best told by the refugees and asylum-seekers themselves. This is why we created this initiative and we hope that it will promote tolerance and acceptance towards the asylum-seekers and refugees in the Nordic and Baltic countries, says Pia Prytz Phiri, Regional Representative for UNHCR's Regional Office for the Baltic and Nordic countries.
A new column will be published every second week. Our columnists write about topics of their own choice, drawing on observations about asylum and refugee related issues. They will share their stories of how they came to live in their new home country and what kind of challenges and opportunities they have come across since then.
